What Is Mechanical Polishing?

Mechanical polishing is an essential surface finishing process that uses abrasives come into contact with the workpiece surface under mechanical force, gradually smooths out surface irregularities, scratches, and imperfections, to enhance the appearance, surface quality, and corrosion resistance of components. It can be divided into the following categories according to the workpiece characteristics:

  • Flat Surface Polishing: Flat surface polishing refers to the process of polishing flat surfaces of a workpiece to achieve a smooth and even finish. Typically using rotary polishing equipment, such as a polisher or grinder. The workpiece is placed on a grinding disc or wheel, and through the rotational movement and the action of abrasives, the flat surface is polished and ground. It is relatively straightforward, suitable for workpieces with flat surfaces, such as sheets, metal plates, etc.

  • Curved Surface Polishing: Curved surface polishing involves polishing the curved or complex-shaped surfaces of a workpiece to achieve a uniform and smooth finish. Oscillating polishing equipment is usually employed, allowing the workpiece to oscillate or rotate on the machine, enabling  the abrasives to come in contact with the curved surface, achieving the desired polishing effect. The process must adapt to different surface curvatures, which increases the complexity of the operation.

  • Internal Hole Polishing: Internal hole polishing refers polishing the inner surfaces of holes in a workpiece to improve surface finish and quality. Specialized polishing tools or fluid polishing methods are typically used to allow the abrasive to enter the inner hole and polish the inner hole surface through rotation or fluid impact, suitable for workpieces with internal holes, such as bearing holes, pipe holes, etc. Highly challenging due to space constraints and the need for specialized tools and techniques to accommodate different hole sizes and shapes.

Mechanical Polishing - How Is It Done?

  • Step 1 - Preparation: In the meticulous process of mechanical polishing, thorough preparation is paramount for success. This involves define the polishing goals, select the appropriate polishing method according to the characteristics of the workpiece and prepare the necessary polishing equipment, abrasives, and auxiliary tools. Moreover, clean the workpiece surface to ensure there are no impurities like dust or oil.

  • Step 2 - Rough Grinding: The rough grinding stage is the initial phase of mechanical polishing, this process uses coarse abrasives to quickly remove material and bring the workpiece closer to the desired shape, aimed at removing significant surface defects such as large scratches, unevenness, and oxide layers, preparing it for subsequent stages. Effective rough grinding requires careful control of pressure, grinding direction, and the use of appropriate cooling to prevent overheating and warping.

  • Step 3 - Intermediate Grinding: The intermediate grinding in mechanical polishing follows the rough grinding. This crucial stage involves the use of medium-grit abrasives to refine the surface further by eradicating finer scratches and imperfections that may have been left behind by the initial rough grinding process. By employing the appropriate abrasives and applying controlled pressure during intermediate grinding, a more uniform surface can be achieved, which is a critical step in the overall mechanical polishing process and is essential for achieving the final desired surface quality.

  • Step 4 - Fine grinding: Fine grinding is essential for preparing the workpiece for the final polishing steps, which involves using fine abrasives to remove the finer scratches and minor imperfections left by the intermediate grinding stage, to ahieved a mirror-like finish. The process requires careful control of pressure and uniform application to ensure a smooth and consistent surface.

  • Step 5 - Polishing: The final stage of mechanical polishing involves polishing the workpiece surface using very fine abrasives, eliminate any remaining fine scratches and blemishes, aiming to achieve the highest level of surface finish, resulting in a smooth, shiny and reflective appearance. During the polishing process, proper technique, including controlled pressure and careful application, is essential to prevent new scratches and ensure uniformity.

  • Step 6 - Post-treatment: This stage typically involves cleaning the workpiece to remove any residual polishing compounds, oils, or debris, followed by thorough drying to prevent water spots or corrosion. A final inspection is conducted to check for surface defects, uniformity, and overall finish quality. In some cases, additional protective coatings, may be applied to enhance the surface's durability and resistance to environmental factors.
