Platinum Iridium Alloy

  • Overview

    Platinum-iridium alloy is a binary alloy with platinum-base iridium. It is a continuous solid solution at high temperature. Solid phase decomposition occurs when it is cooled to 975~700℃, but the phase equilibrium process is very slow. Iridium is volatile and oxidized, and can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of platinum. There are PtIr10, PtIr17.5, PtIr20, PtIr25, PtIr30, PtIr40 and other alloys, with high hardness, high melting point, high corrosion resistance and low contact resistance. The chemical corrosion rate is 58% of that of pure platinum, and the oxidation loss is 2.8mg/g. In fact, platinum-iridium alloys with high iridium content are not suitable for long-term use at high temperatures, and alloys widely used in industry generally contain less than 30% iridium.

  • Platinum-Iridium Alloy Tube

    Platinum-iridium alloy is one of the most stable alloy materials with chemical, mechanical and electrical properties. It has the characteristics of high strength, high elasticity and low contact resistance. It conforms to human biocompatibility and is an ideal material for human implantation and interventional surgery.


    Platinum-iridium alloy tubes are usually used as fordeveloping ringsin biomedicine. It is used as a marking ring for X-ray development of the distal working area in interventional therapy. In application, no additional materials that may be harmful to human body are introduced, which can significantly improve the production efficiency of catheter making, improve product reliability, and make the use safer.


    Interventional therapy is mostly minimally invasive treatment, and the catheters used (such as guide catheters, balloon catheters, etc.) are mostly soft plastic and very fine in diameter, so the development ring is required to have a very small size (millimeter or micron level), extremely thin thickness (mostly tens of microns), extremely high dimensional accuracy and good surface finish and plasticity, so the processing of the development ringrequires very high technical level.
