  • Overview

    Nickel 201 is commercially pure (99.0%) wrought nickel. It has good mechanical properties and excellent resistance to many corrosive environments. Other useful features of the alloy are its magnetic and magnetostrictive properties, high thermal and electrical conductivities, low gas content and low vapor pressure.

  • Characteristics

    Nickel 201 is characterized by:

    (1) Excellent resistance in alkaline media

    (2) High ductility in a wide temperature range

    (3) Ferromagnetism

    (4) High electrical and thermal conductivity

  • Application

    Typical applications are:

    Food manufacturing such as handling of cooling brine, fatty acids and fruit juices due to the material’s resistance against acids, alkalis and neutral salt solutions and against organic acids

    Tanks in which fluorine is produced and where it reacts with hydrocarbon (CFC) due to the material’s resistance against fluorine

    Storage and transport of phenol

    Production and treatment of caustic soda

    Production of synthetic fibers and soaps

    Production of hydrogen chloride and chlorination of hydrocarbons such as benzene, methane and ethane

    Production of vinyl chloride monomer due to the material’s resistance against dry chlorine gas and hydrogen

    chloride in increased temperatures

    Electrical and electronic components

    Electrode contacts and current conductors in batteries

    Current conductors in alkali fuels

    High temperature properties

    Nickel 201 is normally limited to service at temperatures below 600°F (315°C). At higher temperatures Nickel 201 products can suffer from graphitization which can result in severely compromised properties. For service above 600°F (315°C), Nickel 201 is preferred.

  • Corrosion Resistance

    Nickel 201 is highly resistant to many corrosive media. Although most useful in reducing environments, it can be used also under oxidizing conditions that cause the development of a passive oxide film. The outstanding resistance of Nickel 200 to caustics is based on this type of protection.


    In all environments, when temperatures above 600°F (315°C) are involved, the preferred material is Nickel 201.
